Messege of the Chairperson

Nestled in the cultural heartland of Dandabhukti, Bhatter College, Dantan stands as a modern embodiment of an ancient legacy. Dandabhukti—an early medieval territorial division of Bengal—flourished between the Dwarakeswar and Subarnarekha rivers from the 6th to the 12th century CE. Once governed by distinguished rulers like Shashanka, and later recorded in the copperplate inscriptions of the Kamboja and Chola dynasties, the region was a vibrant corridor of trade, pilgrimage, and intellectual exchange and linked Bengal with Odisha and South India.

The commercial success of the region gave rise to large Buddhist and Brahminical sites of learning, including Muglaik Mahavira (Moghalmari), Satdelia, and Shyamaleswar temple sites, as well as Uttarraibarh and Kakrajit monastic settlements. That the intellectual heights rose to a classical level is reflected in the Sanskrit poetry of Vasukalpa and Mahadodhi. Their works epitomize a syncretic intellectual spirit—synthetic approaches characterized the scholarship of the period. Vasukalpa, for instance, composed devotional verses both to Buddha and Shiva.

Despite its past glories, the region fell into darkness and suffered from historical amnesia for several centuries. After the Independence, it was in response to this imbalance that Bhatter College was founded in 1963 through the philanthropic vision of Sri Mathuranath Bhatter and the pioneering leadership of Smt. Abha Maity, the founding President of its Governing Body. From the outset, our mission has been anchored in the ideals of inclusive education, ethical integrity, and community empowerment. Guided by the Upanishadic motto—Satyam, Jnanam, Anantam (Truth, Knowledge, Infinity)—the college has worked to nurture not just learned individuals but conscientious citizens. Our vision embraces both the preservation of indigenous wisdom and the advancement of global knowledge systems, with a strong commitment to uplifting first-generation learners, women, SC/ST communities, and students with disabilities.

Reflecting on our academic journey, the year 2007 marked a significant milestone when Bhatter College, Dantan was first assessed and accredited with a ‘B+’ grade by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). Building on this foundation, the college earned recognition from the University Grants Commission (UGC) in 2009 as a “College with Potential for Excellence,” a distinction that affirmed our commitment to quality and innovation in higher education. This upward trajectory culminated in 2015, when NAAC conferred upon us the prestigious ‘A’ Grade. We repeated the same success of being a Grade A college in the year 2023.

The conferment of Autonomous Status in 2024 marked a defining milestone in the history of the college. This autonomy is a license to empower the college with greater freedom in strategizing its academic, administrative, and financial frameworks and prioritizing its core purpose to enable innovation, responsiveness, and excellence. As an autonomous institution, we can now design curricula as per contemporary and local needs, establish independent evaluation mechanisms, introduce innovative teaching practices, facilitate research concerned with local, national and global priorities, and collaborate more flexibly with industry and other organizations.

With autonomy, however, comes greater responsibility and accountability. The institution must establish transparency in governance, uphold the sanctity of the examination processes, introduce innovations in the teaching-learning processes, ensure quality assurance through internal mechanisms, and maintain ethical standards in all spheres. The responsibility also extends to societal engagement: the college is expected to actively contribute to community development, policy thinking, and nation-building. This vision is consistent with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which support Quality Education (SDG 4) by enabling context-specific learning experiences that prioritize critical thinking, inclusivity, and lifelong learning. Autonomy also nurtures Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure (SDG 9) by facilitating agile partnerships with industry and research hubs. Transparent, participatory governance models contribute to SDG 16 by embedding accountability and fairness into institutional decision-making. Several other urgent Goals also support the vision; for instance, SDG 5 calls for ensuring gender equity in every sphere; SDG 10 demands reducing inequalities in access and opportunity, and SDG 12 insists on adopting sustainable practices in resource use and resource management.

The next stage of this autonomy will involve globally oriented, socially responsive leadership. It is my sincere hope that the college will foster international collaboration and knowledge sharing, embed climate literacy and action plans into both curricula and operations, and further enhance education quality and adaptability.

As Chairman of the Governing Body, I am proud of the dedicated faculty, dynamic leadership, and enthusiastic students. Our future vision is clear: to become a centre for socially engaged, environmentally conscious, and culturally anchored value-based education, where learning not only imparts skills but also transforms lives. I am confident that following the NEP Framework, UGC Guidelines and the patronage of the Vidyasagar University, the college will start fulfilling our future vision.
